End Painful Experiments on Dogs

Michigan: End Painful Experiments on Dogs

Name of Bill: A bill to end painful experiments on dogs

Bill Number: SB 582

Humane CosmeticsLast year, furor erupted after it was reported that dogs at Wayne State University were made to suffer induced heart attacks for the purpose of studying heart disease and hypertension. According to a letter sent to the University president by 11 state lawmakers, “There is a clear pattern of dogs suffering and dying in troubling ways at Wayne State…We are also alarmed that these experiments have been conducted for 30 years without any evidence that they have benefited patients.”

Due to lack of action by the university, legislation has now been introduced to end such painful and fruitless experiments.

SB 582 would prohibit individuals employed or in any way associated with publicly funded institutions from conducting research on a dog in a manner that causes pain or distress. The bill also would prohibit individuals from breeding, purchasing, transporting, housing, feeding or maintaining a dog for use in a research or training activity that causes pain or distress.

Please Co-sponsor SB 582 to end painful dog experiments

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask you to support SB 582, which would make it illegal for publicly funded institutions--such as public colleges or universities--to use dogs in cruel, painful experiments.

This legislation was borne from futile attempts to work with universities on changing their practices in the face of rising public concern for the welfare of dogs kept in laboratories. For example, Wayne State University continues to study heart failure and hypertension in dogs by surgically implanting devices in the animals and then inducing heart attacks. Notably, Senator Polehanki reports that these types of experiments have been conducted for 30 years without any evidence that they have benefited patients.

SB 582 would prohibit individuals employed by, contracted by or otherwise directed to act on behalf of a public body from conducting research or training on a dog in a manner that causes pain or distress to the animal. The bill also would prohibit individuals from breeding, purchasing, transporting, housing, feeding or maintaining a dog for use in research or training that causes pain or distress.

Please co-sponsor SB 582 to protect dogs in Michigan from painful experiments.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
